A Protest Poem

by Harper Beckham

This poem, written by Harper Beckham, is dedicated to you.

Each day I find myself in the halls

Where knowledge is gained within classroom walls

But there is one topic not to be discussed

However it is one I feel I must.

Religion is what’ s hidden away

Fear of offending someone, some say

It’ s true we all have different beliefs

But those are what make us unique.

Did an explosion cause the earth so long ago?

To be honest, I don’ t think so.

Students are taught the Big Bang and evolution

The search for Truth is my solution

We all need a chance to find our own way

Without fear, embarrassment, or shame

Can we learn all the textbooks say

When we don’ t believe it anyway?

How can we be told to be ourselves

If part of who we are must be withheld

My faith and beliefs define the person you see

More importantly, they define who I’ ll be.

So my piece I have stated

Now my words will be judged and rated

No one has to believe my words are true.

But do find what beliefs define you.

My faith is a cause that’ s important to me

Hopefully you’ ll agree

I’ ve made a step closer today

To being able to speak openly and to pray.
