Second Baptist Church
Heads East and South to Spread God’s Love

by Barbara Fatkin

Second Baptist Church missioners are headed to both Ukraine and Brazil this July. A mission team of 20 is traveling to Lubni, Ukraine from July 3 to 12, to conduct an UPWARD soccer camp in partnership with Baptist Missionary Mike Ray and Rev. Viktor, the pastor of a small church in Lubni. They will also hold Backyard Bible studies.

Kelly Ward, Recreation Associate at Second Baptist, explains in more detail the two main goals of the trip, "Half of the team will be returning to do a second Upward soccer camp for Viktor. Last year, after holding an Upward Soccer camp, Viktor's church started an Upward Soccer league spurring the growth of his very small church. Viktor pastors the only evangelical church in that area. Last year, our goal as well as Upward's was to help him get a vision for how God can use a simple game like soccer to tear down barriers of distrust and fear and open up the doors of ministry. He was very open to this, and since our visit he has been reaping rewards for his labors. This year the goal is to offer encouragement and support and to help him put on a camp that he alone could not do, as well as to help advertise his church's fall soccer league. We will put on two soccer camps a day in two different locations of the city."

"Our second mission is for the other half of our team to conduct a Backyard Bible study with the children. Their goal will be to teach the children the meat of the Word using language, crafts, gifts, and games. They will conduct morning and afternoon Bible camps in two locations," Kelly added.

The Ukraine team members include Jimmy, Joy, and Lindsay Moneypenny, Kelly Ward, Cindy Holmes, Lindsay Harmon, Pam and Stephanie Alford, Charles Anthony, Rusty Lane, Rob Shugart, Gary Monk, Jim Dutcher, Tim Crowe, Kirk Ransom, Beth Johnson, Sheldon Hudlin, Adam Hardee, Mike Judson, and David Shepherd.

Caraguatatuba, Brazil is the destination for Second Baptist's youth from July 7 to 17. According to Rachel Condon, 25 youth and adults are going to help Baptist Faith Missionaries AJ and Barbara Hensley (ajandbarbinbrazil.blogspot.com) hold Backyard Bible Schools for small communities where the local Baptist church has established mission preaching points. Other mission activities will include running a basketball camp for a private high school and doing construction work at mission points and for a vocational school.
