Teens Ready to SPLASH
Macon

by Brenda W. Medlin

The youth at Tabernacle Baptist Church will be making a SPLASH this summer. SPLASH Macon, a week of missions, Bible study and evangelism, will take place July 21-25 at the church, located at 6611 Zebulon Road in Macon. SPLASH stands for Show People Love And Share Him.

Unlike other mission trips where youth go to different cities, states, or even foreign countries to rebuild targeted areas and to witness for Christ, SPLASH Macon will take place right here in our own community. Young people of this area will be working to revitalize Macon and showing the love of Christ. The participants attending SPLASH Macon will be involved in projects working on 10-12 houses in need of re-roofing, repairs, painting and yard work. The homes were selected from a list provided by Macon Rebuild.

After starting each day with a worship rally led by Troy Dykes, Minister of Students at Tabernacle Baptist Church, the groups will head to work at 7:30 each morning. Area churches sponsoring the groups will provide transportation to the work sites and make lunches for the teams. "This is really a community effort with several local churches involved," Dykes said of the project. The groups will return to TBC at 4 p.m. each day. Wednesday will be a half day of work with fun activities scheduled in the afternoon. As part of the SPLASH Macon project, there will be nightly worship services. Music will be provided by Tide, a praise band from Jacksonville, Florida. The community is invited to attend at 7:30 each evening.

Dykes, the Project Coordinator for SPLASH Macon, teamed up with Mission Serve, the Student Ministry of Serve Management to carry out this project. Serve Management is a faith based, non-profit organization that provides mission experiences for youth and adults. This summer the organization will host service projects in 18 U. S. cities as well as in Guatemala and the Yucatan Peninsula. According to Serve Management, 1 in 5 Macon residents live below the poverty level and 70% of the population does not believe in Christ as their Saviour.

Dykes has been involved in missions since his high school days when he participated each summer with Bearing Precious Seeds Mission. He later worked with Go Tell Ministries and was also the founder of Y. A. C. K. Youth Revivals. The idea for SPLASH Macon is based on a new evangelism book by Ken and Paula Hemphill entitled SPLASH: Show People Love And Share Him.

Each participant will receive a copy of the book and learn the SPLASH curriculum as a follow-up to the mission project. The book is designed as a six-part study for individuals or for groups to learn effective ways to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Currently over 100 students from six churches have signed up for SPLASH Macon. Anyone wishing to volunteer is welcome to participate. A registration fee of $100 per person includes a participant book or leaders guide, a T-shirt and all meals and lodging for 6 nights.

Lodging will be at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Registration begins on Sunday afternoon, July 20th, and participants will depart from the church on Saturday, July 26th.
