|Indianapolis, Indiana is known as the Racing Capital
of the World. It is home to the Indianapolis 500, The
Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, and now the first ever
National Royal Ambassador Racecar Race. Jared Law and
his father, John Law, traveled from Perry to Indy for
the competition that was held at the Indiana State
Fairgrounds on June 7, 2008. Jared won 1st place in
the Lad's Challenger (Youth) Division "Show &
Shine" competition for design. John took 3rd
place in the Adult/Leader Division "Show &
Shine" Competition.
The Pinewood Derby, hosted by the North American
Mission Board, marked the 100th anniversary of Royal
Ambassadors. RA's is a mission organization for boys
in the first through sixth grades. Fifty-five winners
from 18 state competitions competed in the events and
raised $2900 for world hunger relief. Among the crowd
of over 300 officials, helpers, spectators, and
participants were Royal Ambassadors from five churches
in Georgia. Jared and John Law, members of Second
Memorial Baptist Church, represented the Rehoboth
Baptist Association in Middle Georgia.
Royal Ambassadors first began in 1908 when the
Women's Missionary Union voted to sponsor an
organization for boys. In 1957 the RA's became the
responsibility of the men of the church in the
Brotherhood Commission. RA's pledge is to become
well-informed, responsible followers of Christ; to
have Christ-like concern for all people; to learn how
to carry the message of Christ around the world; to
work with others in sharing Christ; and to keep
themselves clean and healthy in mind and body. One of
the main mission projects of Royal Ambassadors is
helping with world hunger. Another activity on race
day in Indy was a Walk for Hunger Relief, which the
boys participated in.
The purpose for the National Race was to increase
awareness of and giving to the World Hunger Relief; to
provide a model event that RA groups, churches,
associations and state conventions could adopt for the
promotion of missions; and to provide the boys the
experience of teamwork and responsibility. The Royal
Ambassadors National Race for World Hunger consisted
of four events: the National Race; Show & Shine
competition; Pace Car Contest; and Challenge Race.
Second Memorial Baptist Church held their second
annual Pinewood Derby race in February. Jared's win
there allowed him to compete at the associational
level, also in February. From there Jared raced in the
state competition, and, of course, in the national
competition. The men of Second Memorial Baptist held a
fish fry to raise money to send Jared and John to
Indianapolis, covering the entry fees, travel and
other expenses. Over $700 was raised by the church,
and the Rehoboth Baptist Association contributed
another $600.
Although the Pinewood Derby is a new activity at
SMBC, Jared has been designing and racing derby cars
for a number of years in Boy Scouts. He is in the 7th
grade at Perry Middle School.
