Warner Robins Passion Play

An Easter Tradition in Middle Georgia

Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins has been providing an Easter Passion Play for Middle Georgia for 23 years. If attending the Warner Robins Passion Play isn't already a part of your family's Easter traditions, it's not too late. This year's Passion Play will be held from April 5th through the 7th at 7 p.m. nightly at Second Baptist Church on Moody Road in Warner Robins.

If you go, you will see the story of Christ come alive on stage as Jesus journeys through the final days of his life on earth to the cross, the tomb, and, most importantly, the resurrection.

Over 300 members of the church are working hard to present the Passion Play drama at Second Baptist this year. Reverend Gary Morton, Minister of Music at Second Baptist, has led the Easter production since coming to the church 17 years ago.

"We share the gospel of Jesus through drama. Our purpose is to show that Christ died for our sins. We believe the visual impact of the Passion Play helps children and young people better understand what Christ did for us," Morton said.

Planning for the project starts before Christmas each year to prepare for the nightly performances. The cast of actors, orchestra, and choir work together to depict Jesus' ultimate sacrifice for us. Jeff Cleghorn, Minister of Instrumental Music at Second Baptist, serves as the Passion Play's musical director.

Lots of behind-thescenes support is essential to putting on the Passion Play. A backstage crew runs lights and sound. The sets are enormous, requiring 50 to 60 men to assemble. The costuming is elaborate and detailed, and most of the costumes were made by members of the church. Church members also make the necessary repairs and improvements to the sets and costumes each year.

In addition to the many people appearing in the production and behind the scenes, animals play an important role, too. Horses, sheep, lambs, and birds add to the authenticity of the project.

Make plans now to attend the Warner Robins Passion Play this April 5-7. Support Second Baptist Church's effort to portray the love of Christ by sharing the greatest story ever told.

Performances will be held at 7 p.m. each night. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Second Baptist Church office, 2504 Moody Road, Warner Robins. Visa and Mastercard are accepted by phone at 478- 923-7101. Children under 5 years old will not be admitted.
