Randi Velez and her 8 year old daughter, Brooklyn,
wanted to give a different gift this Christmas season.
After hearing about Locks of Love, a non-profit
organization that provides hair pieces to children,
Randi and Brooklyn knew they wanted to donate their
hair.
Randi said it was an easy decision once she saw the
before and after pictures of the children on the Locks
of Love website. Actually seeing the difference the
hairpieces made for the children still lingers in
Randi's mind. As a mother, she can understand how you
would want your child to feel confident and beautiful.
Most of the children that receive the hairpieces
suffer from alopecia areata. This cause is unknown and
there is no cure. This disease is an autoimmune skin
disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and
elsewhere on the body.
This was fun for Brooklyn. She really understood what
this particular hair cut was all about. In fact, her
mother says that Brooklyn wants to grow her hair long
again so she can donate more hair. Randi says that
Brooklyn loves her new hairstyle. A total of 24 inches
was cut from Randi's hair and Brooklyn's hair.
